What are ‘Collocations’? Collocations are groups of words that ALWAYS go together. For Example ‘make the bed’. This is a set group of words that can’t be changed.
Sorry guys, but there are no rules that can be applied to learning collocations or ‘chunks’ of language such as ‘do the dishes’, ‘have a shower’, or ‘make a friend’. But the upside of learning collocations that apply to everyday activities is that you won’t have to worry about getting the preposition wrong! For example ‘take a photo’, some students make the mistake of saying ‘take the photo’ or ‘take photo’ – where the preposition is absent or incorrect.
Collocations have a verb in the group of words, for example ‘get tired’, or ‘make a mess’.
The best way to learn them is to write them out and practice them with a friend where you take out the verb…..
For example- take out the verb at the beginning and see if you can remember the verb that is correct….remember to mix them up!!!
