GOLD COAST TRANSPORT

Getting around Gold Cosat is easy with an affordable, user-friendly public transport system that connects the central business district with the broader metropolitan area. You’ll need a Translink Go card to travel on trains, buses, ferries and light rail.

You'll need a Go card

Translink's go card is an electronic ticket for quick, easy, and convenient travel. In the greater Brisbane, Ipswich, Sunshine Coast, and Gold Coast districts, use your go card on all Translink bus, train (including Airtrain), ferry, and tram services. The best thing about the go card is that it is less expensive than a paper ticket.

Load currency on to your card to pay-as-you-go on all four modes of transport. You can do this at retailers, online or at one of the Go top-up machines at selected train stations. Simply tap on at the beginning of your trip and tap off at the end to be charged the correct fare.

Transport Options

Bus
Most Gold Coast areas can be reached by bus, and most bus lines will take you to major shopping malls, train stations, and tourist sites.

Although there are frequent bus routes in the outer suburbs, they are not as frequent as those that travel along the Gold Coast Highway.

Buses are therefore fantastic for major tourist destinations but challenging to rely on if you are travelling outside the established hub, such as the Gold Coast Hinterland. A one-way trip across one zone will cost you roughly $4.60 in fare, but using a Go Card will reduce this cost slightly.

Ferry
Ferries are a well-liked form of transportation since the Brisbane River runs directly through the middle of Brisbane. A simple method to go from the city centre to South Bank is to take the free CityHopper boat, which runs between the Sydney Street and North Quay terminals. You may go to destinations like Eat Street Northshore and the City Botanic Gardens with the CityCat boat using a Go Card. Single tickets are available for purchase on board if you don't have a Go Card.

Taxi
Taxis provide door-to-door service, 24 hours a day. Fares are calculated based on time and distance travelled – and are displayed on a metre. You may need to pay extra for tolls and booking fees.

A taxi from Brisbane Airport to the city costs approximately $55.

Uber

Uber is a smarter, more cost efficient, safe way to get around Brisbane when compared to a regular taxi. You’ll need to download the Uber app to your smartphone and set-up a user profile including your credit card details. From there, you can use the app to book a car at the tap of a button.

Best of all, Uber is cashless - your credit card is automatically charged - and there’s no need to tip.

Bike

Riding a bike is a fun, healthy and sustainable way of getting around the city. Using 2 wheels can also save you time and money. Brisbane is a fantastic city to explore on two wheels. There are many cycle ways though when you know where you are going. As such it is important to plan your route and take great care.

Note that riding without a bike helmet is illegal in Australia.
