Understanding Cambridge Levels

Wednesday, 18 July 2018, 05:18 PM By GEC Academic Team

Cambridge courses at Greenwich are extremely popular – for a good reason!

  • They are a more intense version of General English, so you will learn more quickly IF you are prepared to study hard!
  • They are also closed courses, so everyone starts and progresses together with the same classmates and teacher: KET: 8 weeks ê PET, FCE, CAE: 12 weeks
  • PLUS, at each level, we offer you the opportunity to take the official Cambridge Exam – a certificate which is valid for life!

But how are the Cambridge Levels different? And which is the correct level for you..?

Cambridge Key English Test (KET)

Greenwich is THE ONLY COLLEGE IN AUSTRALIA TO OFFER CAMBRIDGE KET!

This course is for: STRONG PRE-INTERMEDIATE STUDENTS

You will learn

  • To understand simple written English
  • To understand and use basic phrases and expressions
  • To use the correct tense and sentence structure
  • To introduce yourself and answer basic questions about yourself
  • To interact with native speakers at a basic level
  • To speak about familiar topics such as hobbies, holidays and jobs
  • How to write emails, letters and stories.

Cambridge Preliminary English Test (PET)

This course is for: STRONG INTERMEDIATE STUDENTS

You will learn

  • A broader English vocabulary
  • To improve your pronunciation and fluency
  • How and when to use different grammar tenses
  • To communicate effectively in a range of situations
  • To write well-structured, accurate and easy to understand letters
  • To understand ‘longer listenings’ – such as TV shows, lectures and videos.

Cambridge First Certificate in English (FCE)

We have 2 levels of FCE:

FCE 1 is for: LOW – AVERAGE UPPER-INTERMEDIATE STUDENTS

FCE 2 is for: STRONG UPPER-INTERMEDIATE STUDENTS

The difference between the levels is small. You will learn all of the same skills and practice for the same exam, but with FCE 1, the class will run at a slightly slower pace, meaning the teacher will have time to give students extra support.

You will learn

  • To convey ideas fluently in English using correct grammar and sentence structure
  • A wider English vocabulary related to common topics and abstract themes.
  • How to write longer, more complex pieces of writing such as essays, reports and reviews
  • To operate more confidently and naturally in an English-speaking environment.
  • Examination tips and strategies to help you achieve success.

Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE)

We have 2 levels of CAE:

CAE 1 is for: LOW – AVERAGE ADVANCED STUDENTS

CAE 2 is for: STRONG ADVANCED STUDENTS

The difference between the levels is small. You will learn all of the same skills and practice for the same exam, but with CAE 1, the class will run at a slightly slower pace, meaning the teacher will have time to give students extra support.

CAE is the pinnacle in-depth qualification that shows you have the English-language skills sought by employers and organisations in Australia and around the world. It is now widely accepted by the Australian Government for Migration purposes as well as by Australian universities.

You will learn

  • Advanced, real-world English skills in speaking, writing, reading and listening
  • To use and select the right grammar and structure to convey ideas fluently, accurately and naturally
  • To draw upon an expansive, rich vocabulary.
