IELTS Writing Test

TASK 2

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task. A lot of people now have to change jobs several times throughout their career. Is this a good or bad thing?

Support your ideas with reasons. Write at least 250 words.

Sample Response

Through recent developments in the world economy, now more than ever, it is increasingly difficult to find a job that provides the coveted stability. More and more workers are finding themselves having to change jobs and it is now common to undergo not only job changes, but career changes as well, to continue to be part of the workforce. Although negative points may be inherent to this situation, there are a lot of positive outcomes that originate as well.

The continuing opportunity to learn is often overlooked by those who find themselves in the middle of turbulent times. Losing one’s job is an undesirable outcome but one should always try to look for the silver lining. With new job prospects come new opportunities to experience a myriad of new challenges and if one is open to learning, there is invaluable knowledge that can be obtained by undertaking new positions, new functions and even through being part of different work atmospheres.

It is of course undeniable that economic instability can cause a lot of financial pressure upon someone. Not only that, but the stress that is automatically associated with quickly trying to find new employment can also be the cause of family tensions, which can then lead to relationship breakdowns and even divorce. The current climate in the United States after the recent financial crisis is evidence of this. People have lost their homes after losing their jobs, and this has greatly contributed to increasing divorce rates.

However, all of this can be avoided provided one is prepared for the challenge. This unstable climate is part of the current society, and as such, it is possible to be well equipped to deal with this job changing challenge if one learns to be flexible. Flexibility is indeed key. The truth is that, by learning to be flexible, and understanding the nature of the current job market, anyone can use this instability to their own benefit, and rise higher in their field than they could have done otherwise. Years ago, people may have had stability, but they were also too often content in doing the same job for the rest of their lives and, in this way, not even try to reach their true potential. Nowadays, competitiveness may be higher, but so are opportunities for success.

In conclusion, most would argue that stability is the key to a happy life and although this may be true, what is no less true is that success in one’s career comes through advancement and personal development. There has been no time when these two things have been so within everyone’s grasp. It is up to each individual to make the most of it and recognize a good opportunity when it is presented to them.
