GettingAround Sydney

SYDNEY TRANSPORT

Getting around Sydney is easy with an affordable, user-friendly public transport system that connects the central business district with the broader metropolitan area. You’ll need an Opal card to travel on trains, buses, ferries and light rail.

You'll need an Opal card

Opal is a smartcard for travel on trains, buses, ferries and light rail in Sydney, the Blue Mountains, Central Coast, Hunter, Illawarra and Southern Highlands.

Load currency on to your card to pay-as-you-go on all four modes of transport. You can do this at retailers, online or at one of the Opal top-up machines at selected train stations. Simply tap on at the beginning of your trip and tap off at the end to be charged the correct fare.

Best of all, Uber is cashless - your credit card is automatically charged - and there’s no need to tip.

car Car

If you have an international drivers license, you may choose to travel by car. You’ll need to cover the cost of registration, compulsory insurance, maintenance, petrol, tolls and parking if you have your own car.

Bike Bikes

Riding a bike is a fun, healthy and sustainable way of getting around the city. Using 2 wheels can also save you time and money. However Sydney is not as friendly to bike riders as Melbourne and so you need to be careful. There are many cycle ways though when you know where you are going. As such it is important to plan your route and take great care.

Note that riding without a bike helmet is illegal in Australia. In Sydney, you must carry identification.
