LinkedIn is a powerful job-search tool in Australia. Many recruiters are on the platform looking for the right candidates for their available roles. If you are an international student who aims to start your career in Australia, we are ready to help you

From May to December we will provide some tips about how to increase your chances to get a job in your industry keeping your LinkedIn profile fresh to get most of out it. Our first article is about one of the most important elements in your profile: your picture. Just as your first impression matters in a job interview, the same happens in the online environment.

5 tips for choosing your best LinkedIn profile picture:

1Pick a photo that looks like you. Make sure your LinkedIn profile picture is up-to-date (within the past few years) and reflects how you look on a daily basis – your hair, glasses, makeup, etc;

2Make sure your face takes up at least 60% of the frame. Crop the picture from the top of your shoulders to just above your head so that your face fills the frame and shows off that pretty smile;

3Choose the right expression. The expression will reveal many aspects of your personality, so be very careful and make sure you make a good first impression. Your expression should be friendly, giving recruiters the feeling that                 you are someone easy to talk to and able to hold an interesting conversation;

4Wear what you’d wear to work. Wear clothes that match the level of dressiness at your office. If you work at a startup and wear sweats every day, you don’t want to be over or underdressed. Also, note that solid colors tend to do best on camera;

5Choose a background that isn’t distracting. After you put all that effort into having the perfect expression, you don’t want anything to distract from your face. Keep the background simple so that you are the focal point.
