Christmas and the New Year is upon us! We have compiled top tips during this joyous time of eating, drinking and being merry, to ensure you get the most out of the festive season.

Haven’t finished Christmas shopping?

Many shops are open late tomorrow and Saturday. Chadstone Shopping Centre and Highpoint Shopping Centre are open for 24 hours from tomorrow! Both open at 9am Friday and will not close until 5pm Saturday!

FREE Public Transport

On Christmas day and after 6pm on 31st December, buses, trains and trams are free to travel on.

Melbourne Bike Share - Free bike rental

Until the 26th December you can hire any bike for 30 minutes for free! Take a bike and ride around Melbourne.

December 25th - Christmas Day

Most shops will be closed (Including Woolworths and Coles) so it is best to buy everything you need the day before.

December 26th - Boxing Day

Boxing day is the biggest shopping day of the year. It is similar to “Black Friday” in America. Most stores will have big sales on a lot of products.

Warning: It will be VERY busy!!!

New Years Eve - January 31st

Fireworks are illegal to buy in Australia :(

There will be a firework show in Melbourne though, at 9.30pm and also at midnight. The best places to see the fireworks are at 4 places:

  1. Docklands

  2. Treasury Gardens

  3. Flagstaff Gardens

  4. Kings Domain

At these places there will also be live music and entertainment from 9pm. The city will be very crowded so it is best to arrive early! (More information: http://nye.melbourne.vic.gov.au/midnight)

Drinking alcohol in public

Drinking alcohol on the streets, in parks, at beaches are all illegal. Be careful if you plan to drink, you can receive a $100 fine if you are caught.

Driving during the holidays

If you are planning to drive a car, be very careful because there will be a lot of people on the roads. There will also be plenty of police catching people doing the wrong thing. Remember if you have been drinking you must be below 0.5 to drive!

Remember to be safe and do have a very merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
